TOKYO, April 14 (Reuters) - Japan's main utilities consumed
record volumes of thermal coal and gas for power generation in
the year ended March amid the shutdown of the country's reactors
in the wake of the Fukushima nuclear disaster, industry data
showed on Monday.
The country's regional monopolies consumed 56.09 million
tonnes of liquefied natural gas (LNG) equivalent in 2013/14, up
0.5 percent from a year earlier, while coal consumption rose
19.3 percent to 59.93 million tonnes, data from the 10-member
Federation of Electric Power Companies of Japan showed.
Japan's utilities are again stepping up plans to increase
electricity output from coal and natural gas to replace lost
nuclear power, with a prolonged shutdown of reactors continuing
and rising prospects that many units may not come back online.

The country's regional monopolies burned 4,705,474 tonnes of
liquefied natural gas (LNG) equivalent last month, down 0.4
percent from a year earlier, and 5.35 million tonnes of coal, up
17.3 percent on year and the highest volumes for the month of
March.
The main utilities generated 78.66 billion kilowatt-hours of
electricity in March, up 3.4 percent from a year earlier as cold
weather boosted power consumption.
