JOHANNESBURG, Aug 22 (Reuters) - Foreigners bought a net 7.1 billion rand ($990 million)
worth of South African bonds last week, the biggest weekly buy in over a year, data from
exchange operator JSE showed on Monday.
Offshore investors are dumping stocks in a global rout as the outlook for growth is bleak,
exacerbated by a United States credit downgrade earlier this month, debt problems in that
country and the economies in the euro region and a spate of weak economic data out of the
world's biggest economies last week.
The yields on the benchmark four-year government bond and the 10-year bond
have dropped to record lows as bullish sentiment around South African debt drives
yields to plummet. The 2026 benchmark is seen following this trend as the bond market likely
outperforms the FTSE/JSE All Share index.
Below are tables outlining purchases, sales and net purchases for the week,
for the same period in 2010, for the year-to-date and the year-to-date in 2010.
All figures are in billions of rand.
