BUCHAREST May 8 (Reuters) - Romania's state-owned nuclear power plant Nuclearelectrica will shut down its first reactor from May 9 for routine maintenance work, it said on Thursday.

The company has two 706 megawatt reactors accounting for a fifth of the country's power production.

"Scheduled shutdowns of Units 1 and 2 are part of the maintenance programme and are done once every two years for each unit," Nuclearelectrica said in a statement. It did not mention for how long the reactor will be shut down.

The unit will be stopped on May 9 and disconnected from the national power grid on May 10, it added.
