S.Africa to award Fidel Castro high state honour
JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - South Africa will award Fidel Castro one of its highest state honours, the presidency said on Wednesday.
The former Cuban leader will be named to the Order of Companions of O R Tambo In Gold by President Kgalema Motlanthe on Friday for contributing to the eradication of racism, colonialism, apartheid and inequality, it said in a statement.
Previous winners of the Tambo award include U.S. civil rights icon Martin Luther King Jr. and Mohandas (Mahatma) Gandhi, the father of Indian independence.
South Africa, which prides itself as a model of democracy and human rights, drew fire from opposition parties this week when it denied a visa to Tibet's spiritual leader the Dalai Lama, who was due to attend a peace conference.
