Sinopec to build 10 mln tpy low-sulphur bunker fuel production capacity

Shanghai/Beijing, June 5 (Reuters) - China’s Sinopec said on Wednesday it would have 10 million tonnes in annual production capacity for low-sulphur bunker fuel by 2020 as the largest Asian refiner aims to become a key supplier of the product.

Sinopec said 10 refineries including Sinopec Shanghai refinery, Sinopec Jinling and Sinopec Hainan refinery are producing bunker fuel that meets the new International Maritime Organization (IMO) standard.

IMO will ban ships from using fuel oil with a sulphur content above 0.5%, compared with 3.5% now, unless they are equipped with exhaust “scrubbers” to clean up sulphur emissions, starting in 2020. (Reporting by Meng Meng and Shivani Singh; editing by Gopakumar Warrier)
