EDF widens backup power source probe to Bugey and Fessenheim nuclear plants

PARIS, Oct 16 (Reuters) - French state-controlled power utility EDF said on Monday it had added two nuclear plants to its investigation into the potential loss of emergency electrical sources in the event of an earthquake, to which it had alerted the nuclear power industry regulator ASN in June.

EDF said analysis had shown that certain auxiliary materials were not robust enough in the event of an earthquake at the Fessenheim 1 and 2 reactors, and Bugey 2 and 5 reactors.

The utility, which said production will not be affected, classified the incident as “Level 2” on the international nuclear and radiological event scale (INES), where Level 1 marks the lowest level of risk while Level 7 is the highest. (Reporting by Bate Felix; Editing by Greg Mahlich)
