Etisalat Misr to suspend telecom services in Egypt areas

ABU DHABI, Jan 28 (Reuters) - Emirates Telecommunications Company (ETEL.AD) said on Friday it is suspending services in some areas of Egypt on directives from the authorities as widespread protests continue in the country.

Etisalat Misr, is the Egyptian unit of Etisalat, the state-owned telecoms major of the United Arab Emirates.

“The authorities had told all mobile operators on Friday to suspend services in selected areas of the country,” a statement from Etisalat said.

Etisalat Misr would comply with the order, the statement added.

President Hosni Mubarak ordered troops and tanks into Egyptian cities on Friday in an attempt to quell street fighting and growing mass protests demanding an end to his 30-year rule. [nLDE70Q2OZ] (Reporting by Stanley Carvalho, editing by David Stamp)
