GDF Suez, partners to exit Romanian nuclear plan

PARIS, Jan 20 (Reuters) - European power groups GDF Suez GSZ.PA, Iberdrola (IBE.MC) and RWE (RWEG.DE) will pull out of a nuclear project in Romania due to tough regulatory and economic conditions, sources close to the matter said on Thursday.

An announcement on the withdrawal from the project to build two nuclear reactors could come within days, the sources added.

“The economic and regulatory conditions in Romania are not favourable to launch the project,” one of the sources said. “It doesn’t mean that the project could not be resurrected in a few years’ time.”

CZECH power firm CEZ CEZPsp.PA said in September it would quit the joint venture to build Romania’s sole nuclear power plant. This would leave italy’s Enel alone in the project. (Reporting by Marie Maitre; writing by Muriel Boselli; editing by James Jukwey)
