MTN, BICS to combine global carrier services

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - South African wireless phones carrier MTN Group Ltd said on Friday it would combine its international carrier services unit with Belgium’s Belgacom International Carrier Services (BICS).

“The combination is expected to improve the quality of the international traffic carrier service offerings of MTN operations whilst realising meaningful cost benefits,” MTN said in a statement.

MTN said it would hold 20 percent in the enlarged BICS and appoint two directors to the board.

MTN international carrier services business generated 223.2 million euros in the year to end December 2008.

BICS is one of leading carrier of voice, data and value added services to wireless service providers.
