DAR ES SALAAM, Oct 1 (Reuters) - Position: Minister of Finance, Tanzania Incumbent: Saada Mkuya Salum Date of Birth: 1975 Term: Appointed January 20, 2014 Key Facts:
Salum is a political novice who made a first foray into mainstream politics in May 2012 when she was named member of parliament and deputy finance minister. Before her appointment, she served as commissioner for external finance in the much smaller Zanzibar government, a semi-autonomous part of Tanzania.
She was appointed minister in January 2014 after the death of her predecessor, William Mgimwa, becoming the second woman since independence in 1961 to lead the Finance Ministry.
She holds a Masters of Business Administration from Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, Scotland, and is studying for a business PhD from the Open University of Tanzania (OUT).
Despite limited political experience, analysts say Salum has a good grasp of the technical aspects of public finances.
An aide said the minister was born in 1975, but did not give a precise date. (Reporting by Fumbuka Ng’wanakilala; Editing by Edmund Blair/James Macharia)
