BEIRUT (Reuters) - Syrian security forces arrested at least 30 people, including an actress and a writer, during a pro-democracy protest in Damascus Wednesday, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.
“Syrian intellectuals organised this demonstration to call for an end to the security crackdown and the release of detainees,” said Rami Abdelrahman, head of the Observatory.
“They were gathering in Midan in the centre of the city when the security forces arrived and arrested at least 30 of them.” The protesters were dispersed, he said.
Abdelrahman said leading Syrian actress May Skaf and writer Rima Fleihan were among those detained.
Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad is struggling to put down popular revolts that have swept the country for four months and threatened his 11-year rule.
