UDPATE 1-Libyan capital under sustained NATO bombardment

TRIPOLI, June 7 (Reuters) - Waves of NATO aircraft hit Tripoli on Tuesday in some of the heaviest day-time bombardment of targets in the Libyan capital.

By Tuesday afternoon war planes were making repeated strikes on different parts of the city, several times an hour, rattling windows and sending clouds of grey smoke into the sky, a Reuters correspondent in the centre of the city said.

Aircraft could be heard swooping overhead throughout the day.

In the past, the capital has been hit at most a few times a day, usually at night. The pace of strikes has been accelerating over the past two days, culminating in a steady bombardment on Tuesday. (Reporting by Peter Graff; Editing by Jon Boyle)
