Tunisian army stops clashes in Libya border town

TUNIS, July 1 (Reuters) - Tunisian supporters of Muammar Gaddafi and rebel sympathisers clashed on Friday in the town of Ben Gardane by the border with Libya and the Tunisian army intervened to quash the confrontations, a witness said.

Some 300 people took part in the street clashes in the coastal town, which lies some 35 km from Libya. Some men were armed with automatic rifles and hunting guns, the witness said.

No one was hurt. It remains unclear what set off the confrontations, which residents said involved rival cross-border smuggling rings. (Reporting by Tarek Amara; Writing by Joseph Nasr; Editing by Alison Williams)
