Algerian forces kill 10 rebels: papers

ALGIERS (Reuters) - Algerian security forces have killed 10 Islamic rebels in an eastern area known to be a stronghold of al Qaeda’s North African wing, newspapers reported.

Seven rebels were killed in Kabylie region, near the village of Beni Yenni about 100 km (60 miles) east of Algiers, and a large quantity of weapons was seized, El Khabar and Liberte reported on Sunday.

Three other rebels were killed on Thursday in the same region, local dailies reported.

Insurgents operating under the name al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb carry out sporadic bombings and kidnappings in Algeria, though the level of violence has subsided dramatically in the past few years.
