JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - The Gupta family, which has close links to South African President Jacob Zuma, on Wednesday denied offering the deputy finance minister the position of finance minister last year.
The president in December changed finance ministers twice in a week, first removing Nhlanhla Nene and later his replacement, sending the rand plummeting, alarming investors and triggering financial turmoil.
Deputy Finance Minister Mcebisi Jonas claimed the Gupta family had offered him Nene’s role.
“Any suggestion that the Gupta family or any of our representatives or associates have offered anyone a job in government is totally false,” the family said in statement.
